Description

At this meetup, we’ll feature two presenters talking about tackling challenges with content: acquisition, delivery, and data visibility. After the presentations, we will play some trivia with questions pertaining to the STREAMup topic (distribution visibility), theme (Avengers: Endgame), and the Streaming Video Alliance. After that, we’ll head to the “bar” for some fun, 8-bit virtual socializing (trust us, it’s awesome).

Recap

Our second STREAMup was a rousing success. We had almost double the number of attendees hear Eric Black talk about content acquisition for Peacock and Eric Klein talk about how content distribution has been impacted by the pandemic. After the presentations, everyone took to the trivia ring to duke it out answering questions about streaming, Avengers: Endgame, and the Streaming Video Alliance. Our Executive Director stole the show with a resounding win but Glenn Deen (Comcast) stole the prize! Finally, we adjourned to the virtual “bar” in Gather where we chatted about all sorts of topics and Glenn Goldstein (CenturyLink) entertained everyone with his Snap Camera antics.

Details

This STREAMup was held on September 29, 2020 from 4:30pm until 6:00pm (EDT).

Topic

The topic for this STREAMup was The topic for this meeting was content. Although that's quite broad, content is at the heart of any streaming platform and there are a variety of technical challenges related with acquisition (how does the content get into the platform), delivery (how does the content move through the workflow and eventually to the viewer), and operations (how can platform engineers see into the systems responsible for storing, moving, and transforming content). Of course, the technical challenges related to content become even greater with the scale of the platform. The presenters in this STREAMup detailed a challenge they faced with handling, monitoring, or moving content within a major OTT platform..

Testimonials

These meetups are a great way to stay connected to the industry when conferences and other face-to-face events are still in the distant future. The presentations have been informative and engaging, and the trivia is entertaining. Looking forward to the next one!

The SVA East Coast meetup was a lot of fun. While we’ve all been facing ongoing travel restrictions, it’s been possible to get great information from webinars and Zoom meetings, but the social aspect of SVA meetings is just as important as the great information that is shared. The group online trivia game was great (and we even had some pretty heated competition going on) and was a good ice breaker, and the platform chosen for the virtual social gathering was intuitive and interesting to use while also facilitating a comfortable mechanism for real discussions. Thanks to the SVA for putting this together!

Distribution in a Covid-19 World

As Covid-19 has changed in-home consumption of OTT content, we’ll explore some of the changes that have occurred and ways that solutions such as Open Caching can have an appreciable impact on the end user experience, resulting in higher quality experiences on media content of all kinds.
