Why Did Disney Streaming Services Join the Streaming Video Alliance?

Disney Streaming Services (via Bamtech) was a founding member of the Alliance. We were initially attracted to Alliance’s vision to bring together prominent media and tech companies to collaborate on open standards that would benefit the entire video ecosystem – filling a much-needed void in the industry – and drive a higher quality streaming experience for consumers worldwide.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the Alliance Can Help Address?

While the Alliance has made a significant impact over the years, there are still too many differing opinions on how things should be done (example: HEVC vs. AV1) and this creates a lot of redundancy that’s not helpful in delivering a high-quality video experience to consumers. There continues to be an opportunity for the Streaming Video Alliance to build consensus on core products that will allow for higher quality, faster delivery, lower costs, and improved reliability.

How Does an Organization Like the Streaming Video Alliance Bring Value to the Industry?

The best way the Alliance can continue to bring value is creating consensus on areas where there isn’t a clear path, and being very crisp in the definitions and methodologies we believe are the best practices to push the industry forward.
