Why Did Fastly Join the Streaming Video Alliance?

We are continuously working alongside other platforms to standardize basic protocol handling for CDNs. The work we’re doing with the members of the Alliance lets us interact with our technology and business partners to help improve key aspects of the viewing experience which both we and our customers are passionate about.

What Do You Believe is the Biggest Technical Challenge Facing the Streaming Video Industry the Alliance Can Help Address?

We believe there are two key areas that the Alliance can help address and Fastly is also firmly committed to investing in these areas:
  1. Security: Online attacks, service disruptions, illegal playback, and more are playing a continuously dominant part in the lives of content owners and distributors. We are committed to doing our part to help the industry combat these issues. With our recent acquisition of Signal Sciences, we have significantly strengthened our security offering in Media & Entertainment and we look forward to combining the best of both offerings for a single easy-to-use offering.
  2. Delivering on the promise of fast and responsive user experiences: Easily said, harder to execute upon. Viewers demand ultra-low latency experiences with a rapidly growing landscape of streaming services; the competition for viewers/subscribers are often fought here. With Fastly’s Compute@Edge and overall commitment to Observability and Actionable Insights, we feel we can help deliver on the promise and move the industry forward as a whole.

How Does an Organization Like the Streaming Video Alliance Bring Value to the Industry?

With a strong member roster, the Alliance has helped foster discussions across companies and within segments of the Streaming Media industry. Fastly continuously appreciates the various forums and sub-committees as well the ability to bring our priorities to the table and to better understand requests from the entire delivery chain.

This becomes more tangible with edge computing, where Fastly helps customers move compute power and logic as close to the end-user as possible.
