Metadata

Overview

Streaming experiences require data to be associated with the content, from a basic title and description, to in-depth metadata describing the very detail of the content. It can also contain associated content, such as images, highlights, and extras. It also defines content availability rights, user entitlements, and categories. With the television experience moving to streaming, either with D2C or IP delivery of traditional TV subscriptions, the importance and enhancements of metadata becomes more critical than ever.

Objectives

The Streaming Video Technology Alliance Metadata Working Group will propose metadata definitions and enhancements to existing standards to provide better interoperability and scale for the streaming industry.

SVTA1023: Metadata Landscape

The evolution of content distribution models over the past decades has introduced a tremendous amount of flexibility for content processing and delivery. The availability of metadata, which provides information related to descriptive, business, and technical aspects of content, is needed to take advantage of advanced content streaming approaches. Commonly used metadata approaches primarily serve static distribution models. Additionally, there are a lack of solutions available that provide a consistent, user-friendly, and efficient approach to managing metadata. This document provides a starting point for understanding metadata usage and challenges and looks at organizations that have developed metadata-related standards.
